Is there a vaccine for pneumonia?

Yes, there is a vaccine available for pneumococcal pneumonia. This type of infection accounts for approximately 96 % of all pneumonia infections each year. This has proven to be the sixth leading cause of death in the United States killing around 40,000 people each year. Only 20 to 30 % of the possible risk group is currently being vaccinated. This vaccine should be considered for anyone over the age of 65, as well as for people who have severe pulmonary disorders, cardiovascular problems, immune system suppression or diabetes.
